Athearn Tex-Mex GP 38 Powered and Dummy
Athearn Blue Box is a name used to describe Athearn HO products produced from the 'sixties
until the present time.
For many years these were the only products produced by Athearn in HO and were a very popular line of HO locos and cars.
The cars both Passenger and Freight were kits but of a very simple style with reasonable detail and very nice paintwork for the time. They were inexpensive and complete right out of the box.
The locos were similar in concept, with some details to be added by the modeler but ready to run and with the addition of included couplers, ready to pull very long trains.
These products were ideal for the beginner or young modeler, both from a cost and ease of assembly. standpoint.
A cottage industry grew up to supply details, power train upgrades (not really needed), and prototype-specific modifications.
Today the Athearn Ready to Roll line is basically the Blue Box line built in China.
